Rancho Gordo Black Garbanzo Beans

Rancho Gordo Black Garbanzo Beans are rare heirloom legumes grown in California, known in Italy as Ceci Neri. With their firm texture, earthy nutty flavor, and thicker skins, they're ideal for home cooks and plant-based meal planners seeking standout ingredients for salads, stews, and baked dishes.

  • Heirloom variety: Black garbanzos are much denser than classic garbanzos, with a firm texture that holds its shape beautifully in cooking.
  • Flavor profile: Earthy, nutty taste with thicker skins that add interest without being chewy or tough.
  • Origin: Grown in California and inspired by traditional Italian varieties popular in regions like Puglia.
  • Great for: Salads, hearty stews, black chickpea soup (zuppa di ceci neri), and baked preparations where texture matters.
  • Plant-based pantry staple: A protein-rich, cruelty-free ingredient that supports wholesome, sanctuary-minded cooking.
